Prayers & Squares
Prayers & Squares is an interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. Unlike many other organizations that make quilts for charitable causes, the purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts.
Our motto is: "It's not about the quilt; it's all about the prayers."
Each Knot Represents a Prayer
The idea behind these prayer quilts is simple. A heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with square knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is said for someone in special need, who then receives the finished quilt.
Can you touch a prayer?
Can you pull it close and feel its comfort?
You can if it's part of a Prayer Quilt from Prayers & Squares, the Prayer Quilt Ministry. It's a simple idea with powerful results, but our Prayer Quilts are more than just colorful, comforting blankets. The warmth they bring comes from the prayers that are tied into each knot.
Here at SUMC we are Chapter # 806 and wow, we were not prepared for the need of this ministry. It is has been truly amazing to see the effect these prayer quilts have, not only on the recipients, but the people that take a moment to say a silent prayer and tie a knot in each quilt.
If you would like to see this wonderful ministry continue you can help by providing donations in various ways:
- Monetary Donations designated to "Prayers and Squares"
- Fabric Donations
- Coupons from Jo-Anns, Hobby Lobby and Michael's. There is a box in the Narthex for these coupons.
We are also in need of people to help us make the quilts. We will teach you what you need to know. If you sew bring your machine, we can always use more help sewing. Right now we are working on these quilts on an as needed basis because of the overwhelming response, but our goal it to have several made in advance and ready to go, when a request is made.
We meet every Monday at the home of Tammy Rice, 6421 Chilton Drive, NRH. We start at 6:00 and go until 9:00 but please don't feel you have to stay the entire time. If you can come by for just an hour and help we would love to see you.
